Project Highlights
The Trenton BESS Project will play a critical role in meeting Nova Scotia’s future electricity needs by:
- Storing surplus renewable energy during off-peak periods and releasing it during times of high demand
- Reducing reliance on coal-fired power plants, supporting Nova Scotia’s goal to phase out coal by 2030
- Providing capacity, operating reserve, and essential grid balancing services to enhance the reliability of the province’s power system
Strategically located near one of the first coal facilities slated for decommissioning, the Trenton BESS Project is expected to generate 500 person-years of employment, attract new industries to the Trenton Industrial Park, and contribute to the region’s economic revitalization.
Environmental and Economic Benefits
The project will help reduce greenhouse gas emissions by an estimated 1.8 million tonnes over its first 10 of the 20 years of the project life—equivalent to removing 40,000 cars from the road annually. It will also provide cost savings to Nova Scotia’s ratepayers by reducing the need for expensive, carbon-intensive energy sources during peak demand periods.
