Goose Harbour Lake Wind Farm

Project Overview

The Goose Harbour Lake Wind Farm is a renewable energy initiative developed through a partnership with Port Hawkesbury Paper Wind (PHP Wind). Located in Goose Harbour Lake, Guysborough County, Nova Scotia, the project features 24 turbines, capable of generating 168 megawatts of clean energy. The project will support Port Hawkesbury Paper, which is Nova Scotia’s largest industrial user of electricity. It is designed to meet 60% of PHP’s required electrical power demand and will reduce Nova Scotia’s carbon footprint by more than 350,000 tonnes per year.

Project Updates

Fall, 2025

Construction continues at a strong pace, with over 170 persons on site. There has been significant progress on road, bridge and culvert construction throughout the summer. Civil work at the project’s transformer pad, substation, switchyard and Operations & Maintenance building locations is progressing well, including excavation, forming and pouring of most foundations.

Significant progress on the construction of the massive turbine pads has also been made over the last number of months, supported by the installation, commissioning and use of the brand-new state of the art concrete batch plant. As of September, 14 of the 24 foundations have been poured.

Despite the very dry conditions this summer, work has continued under permit by NRR and subject to adhering to strict environmental conditions. The project remains on schedule with wind turbine package delivery expected to start by April 2026.

Spring, 2025

WMA and PHP Wind reached financial close in early January 2025, with commercial operations expected to begin in 2026. PHP Wind has also developed a communications plan for continued meetings and outreach with the Mi’kmaw communities.

As suggested by the Kwilmu’kw Maw-klusuaqn Negotiations Office (KMK), PHP Wind is undertaking a mainland moose monitoring plan and completing additional field studies, committing to balancing environmental responsibility with economic prosperity.
