WMA – International SOS Joint Venture Inc. was formed on May 29th, 2020, created through an equitable partnership between Wskijinu’k Mtmo’taqnuow Agency Ltd. and International SOS Medical Services Canada ULC. This partnership operates with the specific goal of delivering a customized healthcare solution unique to the needs of those that work and reside within the traditional lands of the Mi’kmaq Nations of Nova Scotia. Through the over 35 years of global healthcare experience provided by International SOS, combined with the intimate local understanding and expertise provided by WMA, we are confident in our ability to meet this goal.
Wskijinu’k Mtmo’taqnuow Agency Ltd. holds majority stake in this partnership, ensuring that the importance of respecting local values and needs remains at the forefront of WMA – International SOS’ ideals. Through this, WMA – International SOS endeavours to foster sustainable growth for the communities of all thirteen Mi’kmaq Nations of Nova Scotia. WMA – International SOS aims to accomplish this by supporting both the local healthcare infrastructure and industrial operations within traditional Mi’kmaq lands, providing specialized & localized training for our healthcare professionals, and implementing culturally sensitive programs such as training and employment initiatives for community members.
WMA – International SOS (through International SOS Medical Services Canada) works alongside various industries in the Atlantic region to provide Integrated Healthcare and Emergency Services at remote worksites. Examples of industry sectors International SOS Canada regularly supports are Energy, Mining, and Construction. Each of these industries regularly deal with uniquely high risks to their personnel, which WMA – International SOS specializes in mitigating through bespoke, localized solutions. These solutions usually consist of a mix of On-Site Medical & Emergency Response Staffing, coupled with Occupational Health Services remotely via International SOS’ Canadian Response Centre. Wskijinu’k Mtmo’taqnuow Agency Ltd. is the economic development organization owned by Nova Scotia’s 13 Mi’kmaw communities, created to advance shared business opportunities and long-term prosperity for the Mi’kmaw Nation.
WMA’s partnership with International SOS, formed in 2020, is working to deliver ambulance services and health outreach programs to the thirteen Mi’kmaq Nations in NS. International SOS is the world’s leading health, wellness, and emergency services company. They have been working with Indigenous communities in Canada for over 17 years, with over 37 Indigenous joint ventures across Canada. The partnership also works alongside various industries in the Atlantic region to provide Integrated Healthcare and Emergency Services to remote worksites, such as mines, energy, and construction.
The community-based medical transportation service is aimed at closing gaps in medical response and to improve health outcomes to community members. Discussions are also underway to expand outreach programs that will bring health education and preventative services directly to the communities. These initiatives will also provide meaningful employment opportunities for community healthcare workers.
