RELATIONSHIP
SECTOR

Canada Infrastructure Bank, or CIB, is a federal Crown corporation and impact investor that supports infrastructure projects across Canada. It provides repayable financing for projects that generate revenue and respond to public priorities such as clean and reliable energy, trade corridors, housing-enabling infrastructure, broadband, and infrastructure in northern and Indigenous communities.

CIB works with governments, Indigenous partners, institutional investors, and the private sector to help move major infrastructure projects forward. Its Indigenous Equity Initiative provides lending that can help Indigenous communities access capital to purchase equity stakes in infrastructure projects where CIB is also investing.

From the WMA’s perspective, CIB is an important financing partner because its investment tools can help Indigenous communities access ownership positions in major infrastructure projects. This relationship supports the WMA’s goal of moving beyond participation alone toward equity, long-term returns, and generational economic benefit for Nova Scotia’s 13 Mi’kmaw communities.

Together, we're working on:

Hants County / West Hants, Nova Scotia
A Mi’kmaw majority-owned wind energy project in Hants County, developed by WMA and Natural Forces to generate renewable electricity, reduce emissions, and expand Indigenous participation in Nova Scotia’s clean energy future.
Between Onslow, Nova Scotia (NS) and Salisbury, New Brunswick (NB).
A new 345 kV transmission line connecting Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, developed to strengthen grid reliability, support renewable energy integration, and create Indigenous equity participation for Mi’kmaw and Mi’gmaq communities.
White Rock, Bridgewater, and Waverley, Nova Scotia
A three-site battery storage project in White Rock, Bridgewater, and Waverley, developed by Nova Scotia Power with WMA and CIB support to improve grid reliability, store renewable energy, and create Indigenous equity participation in clean energy infrastructure.
Goose Harbour Lake, Guysborough County, Nova Scotia
A 168 MW wind energy project in Guysborough County, developed by Port Hawkesbury Paper Wind with WMA equity participation to power industrial operations, support the provincial grid, reduce emissions, and create long-term economic benefits for Mi’kmaw communities.
